Impossible, pour parler du Foostbarn, de se contenter d’évoquer ses spectacles. Car la magie de ce théâtre-là commence bien avant que le noir ne se fasse, avec les guirlandes lumineuses tendues entre les poteaux extérieurs, avec les copeaux de bois autour de la piste qui amortissent les pas comme une ouate, avec l’accueil de masques inquiétants ou bienveillants qui renvoient le spectateur à une posture d’enfance, découvrant un théâtre mystagogue dont le chapiteau est comme le temple secret. Riche en effets composés de presque rien (des tulles aériens, un stroboscope, quelques accessoires, des projections sur des toiles tremblantes), animé par des comédiens protéiformes dont le jeu varie à l’instar de leurs costumes et des personnages qu’ils incarnent avec une incroyable dextérité et une captivante plasticité, le spectacle des aventures de Gwymplaine est un moment de pur bonheur où la joie de se laisser aller à l’acceptation des conventions théâtrales est bientôt dépassée par le plaisir de se laisser prendre par l’émotion, la peur, le rire et l’enchantement de se faire raconter une histoire. Celle en l’occurrence de l’homme qui rit, défiguré dans son enfance par des fabricants de phénomènes de foire et condamné à porter en travers du visage la trace épouvantable de sa misère.
Rencontre épique entre le souffle hugolien et l’énergie du Footsbarn
Adapté de Victor Hugo par Vincent Gracieux qui a su conserver les ressorts principaux d’une intrigue extrêmement dense ainsi que la beauté du lyrisme hugolien, L’Homme qui rit est interprété par des comédiens cosmopolites, qui mêlent leurs accents et leurs talents en un bel ensemble, cohérent, élégant, fluide et fascinant. On assiste aux déboires du pauvre Gwymplaine, élevé par un loup et un bateleur philosophe, aimé d’une jeune aveugle et désiré par une aristocrate cherchant à tromper son ennui dans ses bras de monstre, se découvrant pair d’Angleterre, tonnant en vain contre la misère et retrouvant trop tard l’amour trop pur de ses compagnons d’infortune. Le Footsbarn fait son miel des éléments romanesques et politiques de cette épopée vibrante qui se passe dans ces terres d’embruns où la troupe est née et qui évoque le monde des tréteaux de foire où elle a fait ses premières armes. Mais c’est surtout la rencontre entre une œuvre au souffle poétique et baroque puissant et des artistes à l’inventivité scénique époustouflante qui fait de ce spectacle un petit bijou d’intelligence, de générosité et de créativité. Un vrai et pur moment de théâtre à ne pas rater !
