L’Homme qui rit (Critique de la politique), Renzo le partisan (Critique des armes) constituent les deux premiers volets d’une trilogie qui sera complétée par Prométhée (Critique du divin), signée Antonio Negri. Figure des mouvements de contestation dans les années 1970, contraint à l’exil en France en 1983, l’auteur a découvert l’écriture théâtrale en marge de son travail de recherche philosophique et politique (il admire en particulier Spinoza…). La première pièce, inspirée par la tragédie de l’enlèvement et l’assassinat d’Aldo Moro (pour lesquels Negri fut mis en cause, avant d’être blanchi), explore à travers cette terrible épreuve les mécanismes du pouvoir et de la corruption, les marges de manœuvre des hommes en lutte. La seconde pièce fait aussi écho à des faits historiques : la guerre des partisans italiens contre l’occupant allemand. Renzo le partisan achève son adolescence dans le fracas de la guerre et questionne l’usage de la force en politique. Avec une distribution commune, où se combinent chœur et protagonistes, Barbara Nicolier met en scène ces deux pièces qui interrogent à travers un jeu d’échos et différentiations la construction et les possibilités de la liberté, les dérives de l’utilisation de la violence, les rouages du pouvoir.
