Un spectacle cocasse, d’excellente facture, comme un bel habit coupé dans un tissu d’une autre époque, vêtement élégant mais sur lequel apparaissent toutes les coutures. Voici l’impression générale qui se dégage de cet Hôtel du libre-échange, comédie en trois actes de Georges Feydeau construite selon les conventions de l’art : un premier acte exposant les enjeux contradictoires d’une société bourgeoise mise sous cloche ; un deuxième acte exploitant les cascades de quiproquos et de rebondissements issues de ces intrigues ; un troisième acte résolvant chaque point de déséquilibre et de dispersion. Le tout donne naissance à un comique de situation réglé au millimètre au sein duquel toute réplique, toute parole, toute parenthèse possède son utilité, sa fonction, immédiate ou bien future. Suivant respectueusement le cours de cette mécanique aussi apparente que minutieuse, investissant sans excès les numéros d’équilibristes auxquels se livrent les protagonistes centraux, la représentation élaborée par Alain Françon entre de plain-pied dans ce théâtre du rire que Georges Feydeau caractérisait comme « lég[er] d’allures et sans prétention ».
Une belle mécanique un peu vaine
Sans chercher à intellectualiser ou distancier les parcours tortueux d’époux sur le point de devenir adultères, sans plus user de cabotinages ou d’autres complaisances boulevardières, Anne Benoit, Eric Berger, Clovis Cornillac, Irina Dalle et leurs douze partenaires délimitent, à travers un crescendo très tenu, très progressif, le champ d’un spectacle virtuose mais souvent trop policé. Certes, L’Hôtel du libre-échange ne contient pas les ressorts de cruauté et la pénétrante perspicacité des farces conjugales en un acte que Georges Feydeau écrivit à la fin de sa vie (Mais n’te promène donc pas toute nue, Hortense a dit : « Je m’en fous ! »…). Cependant, davantage de démesure, voire de déraison, aurait probablement dessiné une vision plus décapante des êtres perfides et conformistes composant cette société bourgeoise, une vision plus anguleuse, plus contrastée, moins basiquement humoristique. Ainsi, en se contentant de jouer la carte du gentil et impeccable vaudeville, cette représentation perd en profondeur, en saisissements et en surprises. Elle restreint son envergure à l’univers d’un rire sans épine, un rire qui ne voit passer aucun des nuages de l’égarement ou de l’absurde.
