La mère et la fille fuient la guerre et passent clandestinement la frontière. Il est interdit de parler pendant la traversée en voiture, pour ne pas se trahir ni se dénoncer. Arrivée « dans le pays de la France », la mère abandonne l’enfant pour lui permettre de survivre. Le vol d’une poupée, en tête de gondole d’un grand magasin, permet à la mère, au prix de l’opprobre et de la condamnation, d’assurer l’avenir de la petite, confiée aux bons soins de la charité publique. La parole, interdite pendant la fuite, doit se libérer. Elle occupe la scène par la seule présence de la comédienne, qui fait entendre toutes les voix : celles de la petite fille, de la mère et du passeur, du père et du frère morts ou des passants.
Territoire de la parole
« Chez Kharmoudi, tout est porté par la langue et le personnage principal n’est pas forcément l’enfant, mais sa parole », dit Véronique Vellard. La langue devient un « territoire réinventé par l’exil », et la comédienne se fait son exploratrice, faisant naître, par son interprétation, les différents personnages de cette tragédie. De seuil en seuil, Caroline Stella passe « de la lecture à la métabolisation, du témoignage à la figuration de l’enfant ». Le dispositif scénique reproduit les différents marquages frontaliers qui, sur le sol comme sur les cartes, dans les esprits comme dans les discours, dans les craintes de ceux qui doivent les traverser comme dans les phobies névropathes de ceux qui les tracent et les surveillent, divisent et blessent les hommes.
