Compositeur autant qu’homme de scène, Heiner Goebbels (né en 1952) a fait de la liberté le moteur même de sa création. Il n’est pas une de ses œuvres qui cède à la facilité d’en recopier une autre – toujours plutôt en réinterpréter le matériau, jusqu’à le rendre méconnaissable. Et pourtant sa musique, comme ses prolongements théâtraux et visuels, a un caractère identifiable, inimitable. La noirceur y a sa part, mais aussi l’énigme (ce qui implique une trace – au moins – de lumière). Effleurant parfois la tradition lyrique, le théâtre musical d’Heiner Goebbels s’en éloigne parfois franchement (comme dans Stifters Dinge où d’un plateau sans musicien tout devient musique). Avec les textes d’Henri Michaux qui irriguent Liberté d’action, sa nouvelle création, Heiner Goebbels continue d’explorer son univers diffracté, en compagnie de l’acteur David Bennent, de deux pianistes (Hermann Kretzschmar et Ueli Wiget, solistes du fidèle Ensemble Modern), de sons électroniques et de lumières.
