Quatre hommes se disputent les faveurs de Nastassia Philippovna : Totzki, qui s’est fait son protecteur après l’avoir violée, compte la marier à Gania, jeune arriviste ambitieux, secrétaire du général Epantchine qui espère faire sa maîtresse de la jeune femme qui finit par se vendre pour cent mille roubles au marchand Rogojine. Apparaît alors le prince Mychkine, un homme « absolument excellent » comme le définit Dostoïevski lui-même, naïf, candide, idéaliste et bon, jeté comme un martyre au sein d’une société mondaine frelatée et obscène dont il essaie de comprendre et d’enrayer en vain les rouages. Choisissant de ne retenir du roman foisonnant que les événements et les personnages liés à cette valse amoureuse, Antoine Bourseiller, fort de l’idée qu’être fidèle n’est pas être enchaîné, prend des libertés avec la lettre mais pas avec l’esprit d’une œuvre qui oscille entre comédie légère et drame des âmes perdues.
