Au sein d’une loge d’opéra, un père aveugle et alcoolique (Roland Bertin) attend — en compagnie d’un médecin légiste (Michel Fau) — l’arrivée de sa fille (Dominique Valadié) qui doit pour la 222ème fois chanter le rôle de La Reine de la nuit dans La Flûte enchantée. Pour combler cette attente pesante, le docteur se met à ponctuer quelques propos sur l’art lyrique et la culture de longues, de méticuleuses tirades éclairant les moindres détails anatomiques et chirurgicaux de quelques actes d’autopsie. Cette partie introductive, qui se prolongera jusqu’à l’ouverture de l’opéra et l’arrivée tardive de la cantatrice, donne l’occasion à Michel Fau de tricoter l’un des numéros d’acteur dont il a le secret. Un numéro fait de gesticulations, de déclamations, d’emphases, d’un comique très boulevardier, d’un esprit résolument cabotin. Un numéro qui ressemble fort à une sorte de système, qui certes trouve à l’occasion les rires du public mais laisse totalement à l’abandon le chemin de l’humour ô combien plus exigeant, épineux, de l’humour cruel et ambivalent qui constitue l’une des principales lignes de force du théâtre bernhardien.
Une affiche séduisante qui ne tient pas ses promesses
Face à Michel Fau, l’imposante Dominique Valadié — qui connaît son Thomas Bernhard sur le bout des doigts — investit avec contraste et maestria la profondeur qui sied à l’auteur autrichien. Mais son éclatante performance ne suffit pas à replacer le spectacle à l’endroit du sens, de la poésie et de la pensée. Car la représentation conçue par Emmanuel Daumas apparaît particulièrement statique et superficielle. Assez paradoxalement, cet échec sonne d’ailleurs comme une ode à la mise en scène, démontrant une fois de plus qu’il ne suffit pas de s’emparer d’un grand texte, de réunir trois comédiens virtuoses (accompagnés de Vincent Deslandres, dans deux rôles secondaires) pour donner naissance à un grand moment de théâtre. Cantonnant Roland Bertin dans une posture d’absence et de fixité, ne parvenant pas à épurer le jeu de Michel Fau, à casser le cadre monolithique et démesurément volontariste dans lequel le comédien s’enferme trop souvent, Emmanuel Daumas passe à côté des relations touffues unissant les trois personnages centraux, à côté des enjeux souterrains qui président à leurs agissements. Ce faisant, il passe aussi à côté de la pièce.
