Si le grand public l’a découverte en 2003 sur la BO du film Frida (où elle chantait notamment en duo avec Caetano Veloso), Lila Downs parcourait déjà le monde depuis déjà presque dix ans. C’est en 1993, après des études de chant et d’ethnologie, qu’elle rencontre le saxophoniste Paul Cohen qui deviendra son compagnon de route à la scène comme à la ville. Ensemble, ils exploreront tout le riche répertoire de la musique folklorique mexicaine, des chants indigènes à la ranchera – son interprétation de Paloma Negra, l’un des hymnes de Chavela Vargas, vaut le déplacement. La sortie de ce “Live à FIP” (World Village/Harmonia Mundi) est l’occasion pour la diva engagée de revisiter son œuvre à la fois dansante et intense, enjouée et nostalgique. Et il suffit d’avoir vécu au moins une fois dans sa vie son incroyable version de La Cucaracha pour s’en convaincre.
