Comme dans d’autres pièces de Marivaux, l’intrigue de L’île des esclaves (1725) repose sur un travestissement, qui n’est pas ici décidé ou consenti par les protagonistes et ne concerne pas l’amour, mais les rapports sociaux. C’est suite à un naufrage qu’Iphicrate le maître et Arlequin le valet sont sommés de changer de nom et de condition, de même qu’Euphrosine la maîtresse et Cléanthis la servante. Les esclaves se réjouissent, et les maîtres se désolent, c’est tout naturel. Et voilà donc lancé un étrange “cours d’humanité“ fondé sur une empathie obligée, censé durer trois ans, qui a pour but d’amender les maîtres. Le gouverneur Trivelin, ancien esclave, prévient Arlequin : votre nom, « on vous le donne bien moins pour réjouir votre vanité, que pour le corriger de son orgueil ». Les personnages déboussolés traversent des moments éprouvants… mais comiques. Stéphanie Chevara, qui a déjà prouvé son talent lors de très belles mises en scène (dont Bartleby le scribe), s’empare de cette réjouissante pièce qui préfigure les idées révolutionnaires, même si tout rentre dans l’ordre à la fin. Elle installe ses naufragés dans l’univers scintillant des années 70. Pour un divertissement mémorable, d’une cruauté à visée pédagogique, qui effectivement bonifie les hommes.
