Souvent chez Marivaux, les travestissements poussent les personnages à se démasquer et à dévoiler la vérité sous le fard des mensonges, faisant triompher le sentiment amoureux contre les préjugés sociaux. Contrairement à d’autres pièces, L’Ile des esclaves ne met pas en lumière les méandres du cœur. Ce qui est à l’œuvre ici, c’est une peinture des relations sociales cruelles, et une mise à l’épreuve qui aboutit à une prise de conscience. Victimes d’un naufrage, maîtres et esclaves sont contraints d’échanger leurs identités par le maître des lieux, ancien esclave, désirant ainsi guérir les maîtres de leur orgueil et leur dureté. Tout rentre dans l’ordre à la fin, mais la noblesse du cœur a gagné du terrain. La metteure en scène Christine Berg veut restituer les dimensions dynamiques et humanistes de l’œuvre, utilisant des praticables mobiles pour figurer l’espace mental des personnages, tandis qu’un pianiste accompagne le voyage.
