Une fête foraine et ses manèges, ses baraques à tir, ses voitures de course : Liliom possède la candeur apparente d’un conte. Un conte en clair-obscur, dans lequel un homme à la dérive séduit une femme, se met à la battre, lui fait un enfant, avant que de se suicider pour échapper à la police lors d’un braquage qui tourne mal. Rattrapé par la justice divine, Liliom écope de 16 ans de purgatoire, période après laquelle il est autorisé à revenir sur terre pour faire la connaissance de sa fille. « Liliom raconte un passage, explique Marie Ballet, un passage entre le monde de l’enfance et celui des adultes, entre le rêve et la réalité, entre la vie et la mort, entre la parole et le silence. » Portée par une « écriture à la fois violente, aride et poétique », cette pièce que la metteure en scène associe à un « drame du langage » présente des personnages « comme en exil d’eux-mêmes ». Des personnages « incapables de se dire » qui « tentent de trouver dans le rêve et dans l’imaginaire une issue à leur détresse ».
