« C’est un spectacle pour dix comédiennes et comédiens, beaucoup de musique et pas mal de bruit, du théâtre grand format imaginaire. » dit Frédéric Bélier-Garcia de Liliom, récit des aventures de son héros éponyme, une racaille de la banlieue de Budapest qui travaille dans une fête foraine, sur le manège de Madame Muscat, où son bagout fait merveille pour attirer le chaland. Liliom plait aux filles et surtout à Julie, pour laquelle il quitte le manège. Lorsque l’enfant paraît et que la misère force Liliom à trouver des expédients pour survivre, il se laisse convaincre de commettre un braquage. Mais l’aventure tourne mal et Liliom se suicide. Il comparait alors devant un tribunal céleste, escorté par deux « détectives de Dieu », et est condamné à revenir sur terre, seize ans plus tard, pour expier ses fautes… Souhaitant mettre en scène la pièce de Ferenc Molnar « dans une faconde contemporaine », Frédéric Bélier-Garcia navigue avec énergie entre « terrains vagues de l’errance » et paradis pour diriger cette féerie tourbillonnante en forme de conte naïf et cruel.
