"Etrange monstre" que cette pièce, selon les mots mêmes de son auteur, combinant au fil de l’intrigue comédie, drame ou tragédie. Réel et illusion s’enchevêtrent avec une virtuosité confondante pour célébrer le plaisir du théâtre. « Toutes ces pièces qui mettent le théâtre en abyme sont fascinantes pour les gens de théâtre. » confie la metteure en scène Elisabeth Chailloux, qui a plongé avec délice dans les vertiges de la représentation accompagnée d’une solide troupe de comédiens, qu’elle connaît bien. Au départ, un père, Pridamant (François Lequesne) part à la recherche de son fils Clindor (Frédéric Cherboeuf), disparu dix ans auparavant, et il est conduit dans la grotte du magicien Alcandre (Malik Faraoun), qui a le pouvoir de lui montrer la vie de son enfant. Le père devient donc le premier spectateur de cette représentation bizarre et extravagante, qui le secoue d’émotions et le bouleverse… Un jeu de voilages, d’ombres et de lumières souligne les interrogations sur la réalité et l’illusion. « Corneille vise le bonheur du spectateur qui jouit d’avoir été mené en bateau et c’est bien ce que recherche aussi tout metteur en scène, pouvant dire, comme Pridamant à la fin de la pièce : « J’ai pris ma récompense en vous faisant plaisir. » dit Elisabeth Chailloux, qui a créé une Illusion parfaitement orchestrée.
