L’Illusion comique (1635) de Corneille peut se lire comme un manifeste de théâtre et la réhabilitation d’un art maudit par la bonne société de la seconde moitié du dix-septième siècle. C’est une façon pour l’auteur de théâtre et avocat de rassurer son propre père sur le bien-fondé du choix d’une carrière artistique. L’appellation de la pièce comme « étrange monstre » peut se comprendre à travers la déclinaison des genres dramatiques qui sont là répertoriés. La pastorale s’impose dès l’exposition avec sa grotte et son magicien : le metteur en scène et l’illusionniste Alcandre (Hervé Pierre, au négligé las et cynique) mène la danse. L’homme de scène propose à Pridamant, le père repenti de Clindor, d’observer sans qu’il ne soit vu ce qu’est devenu son fils enfui pour cause d’autorité paternelle abusive. Aux côtés de ce père meurtri et du magicien, le spectateur est convié à voir ce qui d’ordinaire ne se voit pas, la vie des autres. Le père ne sait pas qu’il ne s’agit que de jeux de scène. Sur le plateau, le personnage de l’exubérant et vantard Matamore (efficace Denis Podalydès au comique rentré) fait de la représentation une bouffonnerie, il prétend conquérir la douce Isabelle (Judith Chemla). Mais la jeune fille apparaît comme l’objet d’un amour réciproque de la part du valet du Capitan et le valet n’est nul autre que Clindor, le fils.
Le triste plateau post-moderne de Stoev laisse échapper la vie
Depuis sa cachette, le père reconnaît sa progéniture, mais ne sachant pas qu’il s’agit d’une représentation scénique, il ne démêle pas le vrai du faux ni la vérité de l’illusion. Ce voyeur assumé, un spectateur qui s’ignore, prend pour argent comptant, après la pastorale et la bouffonnerie, les situations comiques et tragiques auxquelles son fils est confronté. À l’instant fatal de sa mort annoncée, il ne peut même intervenir. Il n’est pas lieu de raconter le fin mot de ces histoires enchevêtrées, emboîtées et enchâssées. La réalité glisse dans la fiction et vice-versa : les enjeux de l’amour et du pouvoir relient inextricablement les êtres entre eux dans une intensité ambiguë infiniment variable. La roue relative de la vie tourne sans que le cœur ne puisse faire l’impasse du désir libre. La scène réfléchit le monde, c’est la seule leçon de théâtre. Or, sur un sol noir et glacé, le triste plateau post-moderne de Stoev laisse échapper la vie et ses rêves, face à des panneaux, des portes et des murs aveugles. Par ailleurs, des parois vitrées permettent de « surprendre » les acteurs errant dans les coulisses, un no man’s land plombé de chantier. À trop vouloir montrer qu’il joue, ce théâtre-là se vide de son enchantement.
