Un père à la recherche de son fils disparu, banni par sa sévérité et son injuste rigueur. Un magicien qui connaît l’avenir et les choses passées, cousin dramaturge de Prospéro. Un guerrier couard ivre de ses paroles glorieuses et de son irrésistible pouvoir de séduction, splendide et grotesque Matamore. Des intrigues amoureuses, avec désir fiévreux, rodomontades, conflits filiaux, jalousie, trahison… La pièce de Corneille, « étrange monstre » selon les mots de son auteur, comédie extravagante ponctuée d’événements tragiques – réels ou imaginaires… – et combinant divers registres est un sacré défi pour un metteur en scène. Elisabeth Chailloux, co-directrice du Théâtre des Quartiers d’Ivry avec Adel Hakim, parvient à unifier cet assemblage hétéroclite et à équilibrer l’ensemble avec une parfaite maîtrise, célébrant tous les artifices du théâtre sans jamais verser dans l’excès ou la grandiloquence, mais avec délicatesse et justesse de ton, l’exagération des caractères étant toujours bien dosée, et le suspense bien ménagé. Car si véhémence il y a, ce n’est pas dans la mise en scène mais bien dans la caractérisation savoureuse et piquante des personnages. D’emblée, le ciel nocturne et une lune toute shakespearienne créent une atmosphère d’étrange crépuscule cinématographique, bientôt troublée par l’agitation des hommes.
Magie du théâtre
La scénographie, les jeux d’ombres et de lumières, les aboiements ou cris d’oiseaux, les jeux de miroirs et de mises en abyme, et les très beaux costumes installent les conditions d’une représentation délectable, qui montre avec délice les troubles et les aventures des protagonistes. De l’obscurité surgissent les fantômes, apparaissent les personnages fougueux et vivants. Que faut-il croire de ses yeux ? Peut-on croire autre chose que ce que voient nos yeux ? Une problématique qui traverse l’Histoire du théâtre et les questionnements sur mensonge et vérité, distanciation et identification. Mirage de l’illusion, ancrée pourtant dans le monde réel et des personnages de chair et d’os ! Ce qui demeure, c’est la magie du théâtre, et la beauté de la langue de Corneille, dont les comédiens s’emparent à merveille. François Lequesne (Pridamant, le père), Malik Faraoun (le mage Alcandre), Frédéric Cherbœuf (Clindor, le fils), Jean-Charles Delaume (formidable Matamore), Etienne Coquereau (Géronte et le geôlier), Isabelle (Raphaèle Bouchard) et Lyse (Lara Suyeux) composent une impeccable partition. La grotte du mage devient scène de théâtre, le père de Clindor autant que le public assistent à la représentation. Le monde est un théâtre… et réciproquement.
