« L’Hymne au soleil », titre du projet créé en 2003 en tandem par Lionel et Stéphane Belmondo, est devenu le nom d’un ensemble atypique composé d’instrumentistes à vents classiques et de musiciens de jazz, tous au service des idées musicales du saxophoniste, désormais seul aux commandes de cette formule musicale unique en son genre. « Jouer de la musique sans que personne ne puisse dire si c’est du jazz ou du classique » : le rêve de toujours de Lionel Belmondo est plus jamais d’actualité dans ce nouvel opus discographique intitulé « Clair obscur » qui vient de sortir chez BFlat/Discograph/Hramonia Mundi. Le répertoire puise à la source de grands compositeurs français (Fauré, Vierne, Satie) mais sollicite aussi la plume de musiciens de jazz émérites tels Bill Evans, Michel Petrucciani, Michel Graillier et bien sûr Lionel Belmondo lui-même qui signe par ailleurs tous les arrangements. Magnifiquement inclassable, l’album s’écoute comme un tout cohérent, déclinant titre après titre onze compositions reliées entre elles par des fils invisibles à la manière d’une suite symphonique, inventant en toute liberté et subtilité des territoires sonores « frontières » où la musique respire un stimulant air impur et frais.
