À l’écoute du passé mais regardant vers l’avenir, Stravinsky signe avec Les Noces (créées en 1923 dans le cadre de la saison des Ballets russes) une œuvre qui révolutionne la musique chorale comme Le Sacre du printemps l’avait fait pour l’orchestre : le chœur mixte et les quatre solistes vocaux sont portés par un ensemble inouï de quatre pianos et percussions, dont les résonances créent un décor à la fois prosaïque et intensément poétique. L’influence sur les compositeurs du xxe siècle sera profonde, de Messiaen à Magnus Lindberg, sans oublier Bartók, qui lui aussi sut transfigurer en un langage nouveau les traditions musicales populaires de son pays. On entendra ici Des temps passés (1935), pour chœur d’hommes a capella, pendant des quatre chants paysans russes (1954) de Stravinsky.
