Cette création s’inspire de la poésie de Paul Celan et de Melencolia I, gravure sur cuivre de Dürer (1471-1528), qui avec Saint Jérôme dans sa cellule et Le Chevalier, le Diable et la Mort, compose une trilogie d’une grande richesse symbolique.
Josef Nadj : Dürer et son œuvre me fascinent et je n’ai cessé de les étudier depuis mon passage au lycée des beaux-arts de Novi Sad, en Voïvodine, ma région natale. Féru d’ésotérisme, l’artiste glisse au cœur de ses dessins des symboles qui s’appellent et se répondent selon de sibyllines correspondances, comme une énigme à déchiffrer. Chaque détail peut receler une signification cachée et, mis en écho avec les autres, compose un ensemble complexe qui ouvre à des interprétations multiples, presque infinies. J’ai beaucoup lu sur la vie de Dürer, sur les analyses de son travail, j’ai passé des heures à observer ses gravures à la loupe ! L’œuvre de ce créateur mystérieux n’a pas livré tous ses secrets. Le travail théâtral relève aussi d’une étrange alchimie… Atem le souffle s’inscrit dans la continuité de cette réflexion et de cette patiente enquête. Je retrouve dans la poésie de Paul Celan, qui m’accompagne depuis l’adolescence, cette puissance de suggestion, un art de la condensation et de la respiration. Il sait évoquer le multiple en un vers, dire l’indicible en quelques mots.
La scénographie, qui reprend un dispositif que vous aviez expérimenté à la Quadriennale de Prague en 2011, induit une grande proximité avec le public, réduit à une soixantaine de personnes. Qu’apporte cette intimité et comment influe-t-elle sur le regard ?
J. N. : Elle favorise le focus du regard et permet de porter l’attention sur les détails, les petits signes, les menus gestes, qui deviennent alors autant d’indices. L’exiguïté renforce également l’intensité de la présence et concentre l’énergie. Nous avons découpé l’espace centimètre par centimètre, cherché comment le traverser, l’habiter pleinement, ce qui demande un jeu très dense et physiquement éprouvant.

J. N. : Nous avons chacun notre propre physicalité mais aussi des atouts communs, notamment un rapport au sol très affirmé. Nous avons travaillé sur le temps, sa fuite et sa suspension, sur la dualité entre le plein, le geste chargé, et le mouvement souple, aérien, en contrepoint.
Aérien comme un souffle ?
J. N. : Atem signifie en effet « souffle » en allemand. Il porte la vie, il donne le mouvement d’air qui attise le feu des alchimistes… Il est un outil essentiel pour traverser l’espace, concret et mental.
