Spectateur augmenté ou critique privilégié, Christophe Raynaud de Lage photographie les spectacles du Festival d’Avignon depuis dix-huit ans. Mieux qu’un témoin, il est un artiste. Ses clichés miraculeux réalisent toujours à faire du fragment la quintessence de l’œuvre qu’il immortalise. Son œil sait écouter et son regard fixer l’émotion mieux encore que l’action. L’exposition, conçue avec Laurent Gachet, rassemble et reconstruit la mémoire récoltée au fil des éditions, non pas selon un accrochage conventionnel et chronologique mais comme une « mise en scène aussi bien des images en elles-mêmes que du parcours du spectateur ». « Cette installation est une sorte de mise en abyme » du geste artistique qui fait ressurgir « des moments vécus » plutôt que de montrer de simples clichés. Cour, cloître, gymnase, carrière, vent, chaleur, pluie sont à la fois cadres et personnages d’une déambulation sensorielle. Comme les nymphéas de la Vivonne et le paradis de Combray prennent forme dans la tasse de thé proustienne, le bonheur d’avoir été spectateur renaît des images de Christophe Raynaud de Lage.
