« Quand j’avais dix-sept ans, j’ai demandé à l’une de mes grands-mères, qui allait mourir bientôt, de me raconter sa vie et plus particulièrement son enfance. Puis j’ai oublié ces enregistrements avant de les retrouver une quinzaine d’années plus tard, et je me suis alors dit qu’il fallait aussi que j’entende la voix de mon autre grand-mère. L’histoire de mes aïeules est liée à celle de la Belgique. L’une, francophone, appartenait à la grande bourgeoisie, l’autre, flamande, était une prolétaire campagnarde. La portée de leurs histoires dépasse l’intime, intéresse notre héritage national, renvoie à d’autres métissages. On a tous dans nos vies un moment où notre histoire personnelle participe de la grande Histoire. Les deux actrices dont je rêvais – Véronique Dumont et Valérie Bauchau – se sont emparées du texte, mis en scène par Guiseppe Lonobile. Elles incarnent ces deux femmes qui, dans la vie, ne se sont jamais parlées tout en évitant, par respect pour leurs enfants, la dispute. Elles sont là, réunies dans cette cuisine, ayant ravalé leur colère et portant un regard distancié, à la fois profond et cocasse, sur ce que furent leurs vies. »
