Sans doute le silence avait depuis longtemps noué l’attente au creux du quotidien. Les mots, lentement, s’étaient éteints, englués dans la grisaille d’une routine ouvrière. Lentement, les pudeurs malhabiles et la discrète pauvreté de l’existence avaient fendu les liens d’enfance. Grandi au milieu d’un monde résigné, dans l’espoir usé d’un bonheur toujours à venir, Luc avait quitté son histoire désœuvrée et l’ennui familier, quitté son petit patelin près d’Orléans et l’avenir en trompe-l’œil qui cachait des lendemains pluvieux, pour gagner une autre vie à Paris. Il rêvait d’autre chose, peut-être d’un destin de cinéma, qu’il adorait et collait en poster sur les murs de son adolescence. Luc avait trouvé un emploi comme serveur dans un bar de nuit, près des Champs-Elysées. Du cinéma finalement, il n’entendait que l’écho brumeux dans les bières qu’il servait aux spectateurs à la sortie des salles. La répétition des jours finissait par jaunir tous les rêves et tassait encore plus les mots au fond de lui, jusqu’au dégoût. Un matin, Luc était vraiment parti. Quelques lignes froissées sur un post-it, c’est tout. Il se taisait, se tuait.
Trop loins à force de vivre si proches
Dans Loin d’eux, premier roman paru en 1999, Laurent Mauvignier enchevêtre les paroles et les maux des uns et des autres : Jean et Marthe, les parents, l’oncle Gilbert et la tante Geneviève, sa cousine Céline puis Luc aussi. Tous racontent au secret de leur for intérieur ces choses qu’on ne sait pas nommer et qui tordent le ventre, ces phrases agglutinées dans la gorge parce qu’elles font trop mal, parce que la dignité prolétaire les étouffe, ces remords qui saignent après, trop tard. « Qu’est-ce qu’on n’a pas su faire ? ». Ceux-là disent l’isolement, le vide immense, les corps abîmés par le chagrin, la distance incomprise entre les générations, entre les pères arrimés au fier travail à l’usine et les fils qui refusent l’habitude d’une médiocre réalité. Seul en scène, Rodolphe Dana habite le plateau découpé par les lumières, glisse d’un personnage à l’autre, porte leurs phrases incertaines, leurs interrogations douloureuses, avec une délicate justesse. Ce passage à l’incarnation des monologues altère pourtant un peu l’écriture de Laurent Mauvignier, qui, en fondant le parler populaire en un seul flot, fait résonner la bruyante solitude de chacun. Mais cette colère rentrée, cette résignation désemparée que livre simplement Rodolphe Dana, ça frappe au cœur.
