« Nkolo » est un disque lumineux qui respire la joie. C’est dans cet esprit que vous l’avez enregistré ?
Lokua Kanza : La toute première chanson s’appelle « Elanga ya muinda », ce qui veut dire le « jardin de la lumière ». J’espère en effet que c’est ce qui rejaillit. Sur cet album, j’ai décidé de prendre du recul. Je me suis dit : qu’est-ce que j’ai envie de faire ? Qui je suis aujourd’hui ? Même si je ne le sais pas très bien, il fallait au moins commencer à en faire une esquisse. Je le voulais non seulement lumineux mais aussi très posé et calme.

Que signifie le titre « Nkolo » ?
L. K. : Nkolo veut dire Dieu (rires) ! Certains ne seront pas d’accord, mais pour moi, c’est cet être suprême que je ne peux prétendre connaître. Je viens d’un quartier assez pauvre de Kinshasa où la vie est très dure. Et je trouve que mon parcours est marqué par la chance. Je m’estime parmi les chanceux sur cette Terre : se lever le matin, avoir de quoi manger dans le frigidaire, ce n’est pas donné à tout le monde… On ne s’en rend pas compte, parfois on oublie. C’est pourquoi je remercie Dieu dans cet album.
Comment envisagez-vous cet album par rapport à vos précédents ?
L. K. : Sincèrement, je pense que c’est mon meilleur. On dit toujours ça (rires), mais je le dis pour diverses raisons : je trouve déjà ma voix a légèrement mûri, autant techniquement que humainement. Je n’ai plus envie de faire des envolées. J’ai davantage envie de faire passer des émotions, un message, de la douceur dans le cœur des gens. Quand j’étais môme, c’était quelque chose d’important pour moi, que les gens disent « ah il chante bien, il joue bien ». Aujourd’hui je veux chanter pour les gens qui ont besoin de sérénité – et ils sont nombreux -, et non pour une minorité qui veut voir un animal de cirque faire des prouesses.
Avec cet objectif d’aller à l’essentiel, ce fut un album difficile à faire ?
L. K. : Etonnamment, je n’ai pas fait beaucoup d’efforts sur cet album. Beaucoup de chansons sont des premières prises. Cela peut paraître prétentieux, mais c’est sincère. Souvent il s’agit plutôt de « vibes », de sentiments, plus que de structures alambiquées. L’album m’est venu facilement, mais comme je suis très lent, la production m’a pris trois ans : pour réécouter, pour me rassurer, pour être sûr que c’était vraiment ce dont j’avais envie. Certains jours, je me disais : « il faut quand même que je chante un peu ! » C’était un combat perpétuel contre ma tendance aux envolées vocales !
