Le destin musical du hongrois Péter Eötvös, chef d’orchestre et compositeur, a été marqué par les deux figures tutélaires de la musique contemporaine de l’après deuxième guerre mondiale : Karlheinz Stockhausen, auprès duquel il étudie à Cologne dans l’ébullition du début des années 70 et dont il devient un des plus proches collaborateurs, et bien sûr, à Paris, Pierre Boulez, qui le choisit pour diriger le concert inaugural de l’Ircam et le fait nommer Directeur musical de l’Ensemble Intercontemporain. Au moment où la Philharmonie présente une importante exposition dédiée à Pierre Boulez, ce programme de l’Orchestre londonien (qu’il a souvent dirigé et qu’il admire profondément) prend un relief très particulier. Peter Eötvös ouvre son programme avec l’une des pièces les plus flambloyantes et accessibles du compositeur français, le Livre pour cordes, avant de diriger son Rituel in memoriam Bruno Maderna, puis, après l’entracte, Le Sacre du printemps de Stravinski. Une partition dont Boulez contribua, en tant que chef, à éclairer le génie en particulier à travers un enregistrement (en 1969, avec l’Orchestre de Cleveland), encore considéré comme une version de référence indétrônable.
