Jody (Michel Burstin) tient une petite boutique de cartes géographiques et de guides de voyage. Un jour, il découvre une chaise dans son magasin, sans savoir d’où elle vient et qui l’a placée ici. C’est Carl (Bruno Rochette), un ami farfelu et affabulateur qui est à l’origine de cette démarche énigmatique. Il continuera, chaque jour, d’apporter de nouvelles chaises jusqu’à envahir complètement la boutique de Jody. Faisant librement écho aux Chaises d’Eugène Ionesco, Lonely Planet laisse peu à peu émerger une réalité dramatique : toutes les chaises que Carl transporte ont appartenu à des amis disparus… « Sans que le mot Sida ne soit jamais prononcé dans la pièce, confie la metteure en scène Sylvie Rolland, ni qu’une période précise ne soit nommée, on découvre au fur et à mesure que l’action se déroule dans les années 1980, au moment de ce qu’on appelle “les années noires” du Sida. (…) Carl et Jody perdent leurs amis emportés par cette maladie meurtrière mais leur force est de savoir garder leur dignité et leur humour. » Ainsi, creusant les thèmes de la différence, de la stigmatisation, de la solidarité, de l’amitié, Lonely Planet passe par la dérision pour traiter de façon digne et pudique des sujets d’une touchante gravité.
