Pourquoi est-ce important pour l’ONJ de venir à Avignon ?
Daniel Yvinec : C’est intéressant pour nous de rencontrer des gens qui ne vont pas forcément faire la démarche d’aller sur notre site, de regarder ce qu’on fait, de penser à nous – et auxquels nous ne penserions pas forcément non plus d’ailleurs. J’ai conçu ça un peu comme des séances de cinéma permanentes de manière à ce que les gens puissent venir un peu quand ils veulent, même si on est limités à cent places. On va faire des concerts un peu « déshabillés », presque acoustiques : ce sera un peu l’ONJ « naked » ! À chaque séance, on va jouer trois morceaux du répertoire « Shut up and dance » avec tout l’orchestre. Ensuite je garderai les trois solistes des morceaux qu’on aura interprétés et le reste de l’heure et demie sera consacrée à un échange avec les gens présents. L’idée, c’est d’expliquer notre démarche, rencontrer les gens et donner la parole à des curieux qui ne sont pas forcément spécialistes, des gens qui ont plein de questions à poser et qui parfois n’osent pas, ce qui est bien dommage. Le but, c’est aussi de dédramatiser l’image qui colle parfois au jazz, cette (fausse) impression qu’il faut être initié pour s’y aventurer.
Le but, c’est aussi de présenter l’ONJ à des programmateurs…
Daniel Yvinec : On aurait bien tort de s’en priver ! Mais on veut surtout générer une dynamique un peu nouvelle, différente de celle qui consiste à envoyer un CD et de relancer par téléphone. Cet orchestre, c’était un peu un pari : réunir des jeunes musiciens que je ne connaissais pas et qui ne se connaissaient pas. On s’est battu pour que ça marche et que les gens comprennent cette démarche. Ça a pris un peu de temps. Maintenant on commence à avoir un vrai rayonnement, à travers nos disques et des concerts un peu partout : on revient de Chine, on est allé jouer aux Etats-Unis, on va aller jouer à Berlin, bref on se bouge ! Et on remplit des salles de plus en plus importantes. Je ne dis pas ça pour fanfaronner, mais parce que je suis content de voir récompensé un travail de tous les jours avec mon équipe.
Cette stratégie d’ouverture s’inscrit-elle dans la démarche que vous imprimez à l’orchestre depuis votre nomination en 2008 ?
Daniel Yvinec : Complètement. Mais il ne faut évidemment pas faire de confusion entre le fait d’aller vers les gens et le fait de faire de la musique pour qu’elle plaise aux gens. Surtout dans le domaine du jazz où l’on sait par définition qu’on ne deviendra pas des pop stars, il n’y a qu’une seule option : faire ce qu’on aime et aller au bout de ses idées. Plus on est déterminé dans ce qu’on fait, plus on a de chances de se faire entendre puis apprécier. Je ne me soucie pas de plaire dans la musique que je fais. En revanche, en ce qui concerne son « emballage », la manière de la présenter, l’énergie dépensée à la diffuser et à la défendre, je suis un vrai prêcheur !
