L’anecdote veut que lors d’une des dernières répétitions en 1909, Richard Strauss cria à l’intention du chef d’orchestre « plus fort, j’entends encore Mme Heink » (la créatrice du rôle de Clytemnestre). La puissance du conflit assumé entre voix et orchestre dans Elektra traduit la violence d’un épisode sanglant de la tragédie des Atrides adapté par Hofmannsthal d’après Sophocle, et pour lequel le compositeur allemand a écrit une musique où le rituel se confond avec le rythme de la valse, dans des variations jusqu’aux confins de la monstruosité. Pour la reprise de cette chorégraphie de la vengeance réglée par Robert Carsen, c’est Christine Goerke, Elza van der Heever et Angela Denoke, un magistral trio de grandes voix dramatiques d’aujourd’hui, qui incarneront les rivalités hallucinées d’Elektra, Chrysothemis et Klytämnestra, sous la baguette de Semyon Bychkov.
