La, si, ré, mi : quatre notes, un pianiste et cinq chanteurs pour une partition atypique où le sujet de l’opéra est… l’opéra qu’ils sont en train de chanter. A travers le jeu des voix et le jeu théâtral, c’est le regard de l’interprète sur le chant et la création qui est dévoilé avec un sens du décalage, une ironie et un humour irrésistibles. Ecrit en 1972 et créé en France dix ans plus tard, repris avec succès en 2003 par les chanteurs de l’Atelier lyrique de Franche-Comté, l’opus le plus célèbre du compositeur minimaliste et librettiste Tom Johnson se joue des stéréotypes et dévoile les arcanes de la composition autant que les doutes et triomphes des chanteurs. S’inspirant de l’esthétique avant-gardiste des années 70 et des illustrations du livre Imaginary Music de Tom Johnson, Gilles et Corinne Benizio, applaudis dans la mise en scène de King Arthur de Purcell, imaginent une création pleine de fantaisie. Les cinq rôles vocaux de l’opéra – soprano, contralto, ténor, baryton et basse – n’y sont peut-être pas plus beaux que d’habitude, mais ils visent à être en tout cas beaucoup plus drôles, n’hésitant pas à flirter avec une dérision faussement féroce aux lisières de l’absurde.
