L’Opéra de quatre notes, écrit en 1972, est une des œuvres les plus fameuses du compositeur Tom Johnson, maître minimaliste choisissant l’économie la plus stricte pour composer un opéra aussi beau que drôle où l’art lyrique se prend à son propre jeu. Duo des quarante-deux mesures comptées, solo expédié de la basse, roucoulements de la soprano ou angoisse du ténor à tenir son aigu : l’opéra s’amuse dans des perspectives à la Pirandello et chante sa propre possibilité pour mieux la célébrer. « Les chanteurs chantent un opéra, c’est-à-dire que le sujet de l’opéra est cet opéra qu’ils chantent », remarque malicieusement Paul-Alexandre Dubois qui met en scène les artistes de l’Atelier Lyrique de Franche-Comté dans cette version saluée par Tom Johnson lui-même comme une des meilleures de son œuvre. Un décor soigné, des artistes de talent et un pianiste impeccable : tout concourt à faire de cette réunion minimaliste une soirée prodigue en plaisirs !
