Un voile de fumée se propage dans la salle, des lumières vaporeuses envahissent le plateau… Nous voilà plongés dans les bas-fonds de Londres, au cœur de L’Opéra de quat’sous, l’insolent chef-d’œuvre de Bertolt Brecht sur une musique de Kurt Weill. Tout au long du spectacle, le metteur en scène, Laurent Fréchuret, recrée parfaitement l’atmosphère interlope de la pièce, avec son cortège de mendiants, truands, flics et prostituées. Cela tient notamment à sa grande maîtrise de l’espace scénique – les premières représentations se sont déroulées au Théâtre de Sartrouville, dont Fréchuret est le directeur. Habilement, les musiciens sont installés d’un côté puis de l’autre de la scène tandis que la fosse est investie par les acteurs. Ces derniers, à la fois comédiens et chanteurs (plus comédiens pour les hommes, plus chanteurs pour les femmes) privilégient un jeu frontal, prenant le public à témoin. Il en ressort une lecture rythmée toujours lisible, misant avant tout sur la dimension grotesque de la pièce.
Performance des musiciens
On ne peut que regretter le peu d’approfondissement de l’aspect politique de l’œuvre, dont l’une des phrases clés est le célèbre « d’abord la bouffe, ensuite la morale ». La saison dernière, à l’Opéra de Madrid, le collectif catalan La Fura dels Baus avait mis en scène Grandeur et décadence de la ville de Mahagonny, autre réussite du tandem Brecht-Weill, en dénonçant les dérives de la société de consommation et les inégalités de la mondialisation. Nul doute que L’Opéra de quat’sous possède aussi ses propres résonnances actuelles, en particulier dans le contexte de crise économique et financière. La direction d’acteurs manque d’ailleurs, elle aussi, d’engagement, restant souvent très (trop ?) sage. Il faut par contre saluer sans réserve la performance des musiciens placés sous la direction, depuis le piano, de Samuel Jean. Cuivres, banjo et batterie font swinguer comme il se doit la partition de Kurt Weill. Mais surtout, Samuel Jean, qui a beaucoup travaillé comme chef de chant au Théâtre du Châtelet, soigne également les thèmes plus intimes, dans lesquels surgissent ici et là des motifs étonnamment proches de Bach ou de Mozart. Les parties chantées sont bien servies mais pâtissent de la traduction en français et d’une amplification pas toujours équilibrée.
