Avec son librettiste Claus H. Henneberg, Aribert Reimann (né en 1936) est parvenu à faire de son Lear un opéra dont la force dramatique égale celle de la tragédie de Shakespeare. Plus de quarante ans après sa création, l’œuvre n’a pas pris une ride, cela grâce à une musique mouvante, très orchestrale et en même temps minutieuse, presque chambriste. Grâce surtout à une écriture vocale qui confère aux personnages une grande profondeur de caractère, à commencer par celui du roi, écrit sur mesure pour Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau et magnifiquement repris par le baryton danois Bo Skovhus, impressionnant lors de la création de cette production en mai 2016.
