Passé à la postérité pour ses opéras-bouffes, Offenbach a commencé sa carrière comme violoncelliste virtuose, avant de devenir sous le Second Empire l’une des grandes figures du genre lyrique. Parmi les quelque 600 opus qu’il écrivit pour le répertoire instrumental et orchestral, on compte un Grand Concerto pour violoncelle dit Concerto militaire, écrit à l’aube du Printemps des peuples de 1848. Edgar Moreau défendra une vaste partition – reconstituée il y a une vingtaine d’années grâce à l’opiniâtreté musicologique du spécialiste actuel du compositeur, Jean-Christophe Keck – qui synthétise les influences des maîtres français et germaniques qui ont influencé Offenbach. L’hommage aux formes du passé se retrouve dans les Six airs de danse dans le style ancien extraits de la musique de scène de Delibes pour le drame de Hugo Le Roi s’amuse. Quant à l’esprit, il n’est jamais bien loin chez Haydn, comme dans la Symphonie n°82 en ut majeur surnommée l’Ours en raison des premières mesures du finale évoquant la démarche de l’animal.
