Dans La mise en trop(1) (intervention prononcée, en 1988, lors du Colloque international sur le théâtre contemporain en Allemagne et en France), Michel Vinaver étudie les rapports qui opposent le champ littéraire au champ théâtral, l’artiste auteur dramatique à l’artiste metteur en scène. Cette analyse (à rapprocher d’un autre texte — Théâtre pour l’œil, théâtre pour l’oreille(1) — écrit à l’occasion de la création de L’Ordinaire en 1983(2)) apporte un éclairage précieux à la représentation conjointement élaborée par l’auteur et Gilone Brun. Une représentation à la scénographie austère, voire ascétique, qui réfute psychologie, réalisme et théâtralité pour tenter de donner accès à la pièce par le seul biais des mots, des ruptures et des silences, pleins et creux qui semblent vouloir engendrer une matière théâtrale pure et sans artifice. Ainsi, c’est en centrant leur travail sur les lignes mélodiques et rythmiques du texte (lignes qui s’entrecroisent pour créer une polyphonie textuelle, élément caractéristique de l’écriture vinavérienne), que les deux metteurs en scène tentent de faire surgir les multiples thématiques de L’Ordinaire : l’organisation hiérarchique de la société, le monde des multinationales, l’adaptation de l’individu face à une situation extrême…
Echapper à « La mise en trop »
Ce spectacle adressé plus que véritablement joué révèle quelques moments d’une acuité surprenante, moments au cours desquels les répliques des onze comédiens (la distribution est remarquable) sonnent, fusent et transpercent l’espace de la salle Richelieu. Ainsi, au cours des morceaux 1 et 5, l’abstraction radicale qui se fait jour (l’ensemble des interprètes, face au public, forment une ligne à l’avant scène et profèrent leurs répliques ; un groupe à l’arrière scène, en pleine pénombre, compose un chœur dont les voix se détachent sans que l’on puisse les relier aux personnages) permet au théâtre de jaillir. Lors de ces moments-là, un ailleurs naît, ailleurs qui captive et assure l’apparition de l’intensité faisant défaut au reste de la représentation. Car, à ces exceptions près, Michel Vinaver et Gilone Brun enferment L’Ordinaire dans un entre-deux flottant qui rend la résurgence de telles fulgurances difficile. N’assumant ni la force de l’incarnation, ni celle de l’abstraction, leur spectacle butte sur son incapacité à mener ses idéaux de dépouillement jusqu’à la beauté formelle de l’oratorio.
