Ayant longtemps été considéré comme un texte injouable, Lorenzaccio n’a jamais été représenté sur scène du vivant de son auteur. « Alfred de Musset nous a laissé une pièce trop longue, explique Jean-Louis Martin-Barbaz, trop foisonnante, et si peu classique qu’elle s’apparente à Shakespeare ou à Schiller. Il fallut Sarah Bernhardt qui incarna le rôle-titre puis Gérard Philipe pour redonner sa place, après coupures, à un chef-d’œuvre mal aimé. » Aujourd’hui, dans la mise en scène que signe le directeur du Studio d’Asnières-sur-Seine, c’est Benjamin Tholozan qui incarne le rôle de Lorenzo et Patrick Simon celui du Duc Alexandre. « C’est une pièce d’acteurs, faite pour les acteurs, déclare le metteur en scène. » Une pièce au sein de laquelle Jean-Louis Martin-Barbaz envisage Lorenzo comme le personnage mythique « d’une jeune perdue à la recherche de sa transcendance », le personnage ambivalent d’un « poème dédié à notre histoire ».
