Paul Agnew est de longue date un ardent défenseur de la musique de Monteverdi, comme en témoigne le travail mené ces dernières années sur l’intégrale des madrigaux du compositeur (trois disques, parus sur le propre label des Arts florissants, en proposent une anthologie). Il s’attaque cette saison à L’Orfeo, opéra fondateur créé en 1607, dont il signe également la mise en espace, les costumes étant confiés à Alain Blanchot (qui avait notamment créé ceux d’Il Sant’Alessio de Landi) et les décors et lumières à Christophe Nallet. Paul Agnew revendique « un Orfeo intime » dans un décor épuré qui permet de « remettre l’œuvre dans son contexte antique et de placer la musique et, par le biais de la musique, le texte au cœur du spectacle et de l’expérience du spectateur ». Dans le rôle d’Orphée, on retrouve le ténor Cyril Auvity. Hannah Morrison, qui a participé à l’interprétation des madrigaux sous la direction de Paul Agnew, sera Eurydice.
