Lorin Maazel nous a souvent laissé un sentiment mitigé. D’un côté, comment ne pas être impressionné par sa gestique parfaite, qui en fait l’un des meilleurs dompteurs d’orchestres ? Mais musicalement, cette direction est parfois ennuyeuse, voire douteuse (quand il fait un ralenti dans le Boléro de Ravel par exemple…). On a alors du mal à comprendre que le patron de l’Orchestre de la Communauté de Valence soit aujourd’hui l’un des chefs les mieux payés au monde (50 000 euros environ par concert). A la tête de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Vienne, il associe, au Théâtre de l’Avenue Montaigne, la Symphonie n°6 « Pastorale » de Beethoven au Sacre du Printemps de Stravinsky. S’il ne faut sans doute pas attendre grand chose de l’interprétation de la première œuvre, il y a par contre fort à parier que le chef d’œuvre de Stravinsky sera donné de manière brillante et spectaculaire, qui plus est sur les lieux mêmes de sa création.
