La venue à Paris de ce chef surdoué aux visions limpides et engagées est toujours un événement source de grands bonheurs musicaux. La chance sourit d’autant plus au mélomane parisien aujourd’hui que Salonen débarque avec ses musiciens du Los Angeles Philharmonic, rarement présents dans notre ville. De plus, le répertoire qu’il a choisi tranche avec le copié-collé qui sévit gravement dans la programmation des orchestres étrangers de passage à Paris. En quatre concerts, Salonen nous invite à écouter d’affilée les sept symphonies de Sibelius ainsi que ses principaux poèmes symphoniques. Ce fabuleux testament orchestral nous fait voyager de la très romantique Première Symphonie en mi mineur, composée en 1899 jusqu’à la Septième en ut majeur, signée 25 ans plus tard, et conçue en un seul mouvement d’à peine plus de 20 minutes. « Tandis que d’autres compositeurs vous offrent toutes sortes de cocktails, je vous sers quant à moi une eau froide et pure » écrivait malicieusement Sibelius à son éditeur. Aucun chef du circuit international n’est plus légitime que Salonen pour nous révéler toutes les richesses de cette musique et finalement réveiller la lave brûlante qui couve sous l’épaisseur de glace.
