Pour l’occasion, Agathe Alexis a totalement repensé le rapport scène/salle du petit Théâtre de L’Atalante. Inventant un espace tout en longueur, la metteure en scène et comédienne a souhaité placer le public au plus près des comédiens qui interprètent, à ses côtés, Loth et son Dieu. Pas plus de quatre rangées de spectateurs bordent ainsi le bar de Sodome dans lequel Howard Barker fait se rencontrer Loth (Michel Ouimet), son épouse (Agathe Alexis), un serveur (Jaime Flor) et l’ange (François Frapier) envoyé sur terre pour ordonner au couple de quitter la ville. Constituée d’une matière littéraire dense et sophistiquée – une matière vigoureuse, compacte, qui renonce à la ponctuation -, cette nouvelle pièce confirme l’audace et la singularité de son auteur. Déployant tout un jeu de relations, d’entrelacs thématiques et de mouvements poétiques, Loth et son Dieu, comme l’ensemble des œuvres de Howard Barker, ne cherche pas à élaborer un théâtre qui se réduirait à la confrontation d’impulsions psychologiques, à la résolution d’intrigues ou la composition de conjonctures réalistes, mais bien à provoquer chocs et tensions par le biais d’une forme artistique que le dramaturge a baptisée Théâtre de la Catastrophe.
Une écriture exigeante et poétique
Pour naître, pour que sa force et sa spécificité réussissent à porter, à cristalliser l’espace temporel de la représentation, un tel théâtre requiert une forme d’élévation et d’intériorité, une appréhension « du dire » libre, ample, concrète, coupante… Une appréhension propre à favoriser l’émergence de deux réalités : celle de la texture théâtrale issue de l’architecture du texte ; celle du corps même de la langue, du corps même de l’écriture. Malheureusement, la plupart de ces propriétés font gravement défaut au spectacle conçu par Agathe Alexis. La metteure en scène n’a en effet pas su insuffler à sa représentation la tenue et la hauteur capables de révéler l’écriture de Howard Barker. Portant depuis de nombreuses années un regard théorique passionnant sur l’art dramatique, l’écrivain a eu l’occasion d’expliquer que « le texte, cette substance pour la bouche des acteurs, doit avoir quelque chose, du moins dans les mises en scène qui [lui] plaisent, du latin liturgique des églises du Moyen-Age : une langue complexe, douée d’une beauté et d’un rythme propres ». C’est précisément ce rythme, cette beauté et cette complexité que ne parvient jamais réellement à atteindre la création française de Loth et son Dieu.
