Le sonnet amoureux, à la manière de Pétrarque et de la poésie précieuse, fait l’éloge courtois de la dame en évoquant la passion qu’on lui porte. La forme particulière des Sonnets de Shakespeare dégage trois quatrains suivis d’un distique révélateur. Mais l’étrangeté singulière et scintillante de ces poèmes tient au fait qu’ils s’adressent non à une femme mais à un jeune poète dont la beauté et les qualités inspirent au dramaturge des déclarations enflammées et une réflexion sur l’amour et la jeunesse, le temps qui passe et la mort attendue. C’est aussi une méditation sur l’acte d’écrire. Peter Brook, merveilleux shakespearien, évoque dans l’œuvre qu’il met au jour, cette tranquillité partagée, puis « peu à peu les peines d’amour apparaissent : séparation, trahison, infidélité… » Dans un second temps, les Sonnets expriment un amour qui dépasse tout et se révèle plus fort que la vieillesse et la mort. Brook s’attache à ce regard-là par l’entreprise de deux acteurs anglophones, Natasha Parry et Bruce Myers dont la parole sera surtitrée en français. De mystérieuses confidences amoureuses à saisir.
