Si l’on en croit le poète persan Hafiz, « les mots d’amour ne sont pas de ceux que l’on peut prononcer ». Autant dire que la renommée des paroles d’amour enfreint un grand tabou en se répandant sans compter dans le patrimoine littéraire. Shakespeare n’a pas dérogé au genre par l’intermédiaire de ses Sonnets destinés à un mystérieux ami et à une dame brune. Qu’ils soient écrits à l’intention d’un amant ou d’une amante, la question n’est pas là. Elle concerne plutôt le temps qui métamorphose l’expérience individuelle en un chapelet d’états d’âme, les fameux moods. Celui qui aime s’identifie à l’activité qui le fonde : celui-là seul existe : « être aimé, c’est passer ; aimer, c’est durer », dit Musil.Or l’amoureux heureux, si valorisé soit-il, reste écartelé entre l’élévation de son sentiment et la bassesse des sarcasmes qu’impose une passion soumise au temps qui passe et abîme. Voilà l’amant à présent victime de la terreur de perdre l’objet de son adoration. L’angoisse est due à l’inconstance supposée, à la trahison et à la mort proche : « Mais laisse avec ma chair ton amour disparaître Car le monde pourrait à raison se moquer, Quand je ne serai plus, de te voir me pleurer. »
Un voyage sacré de reconnaissance dans les sensations de l’amour
Le répertoire poétique de ces émotions secrètes va du culte de la beauté à son rejet, du scrupule à la désillusion, de la crainte de l’oubli au poison du doute : « car je te jurai belle, et claire te pus croire, Toi, sombre comme enfer, et comme la nuit noire. » L’amour est un péché dont on ne se défend pas, et les relations de l’amant à l’être aimé s’inscrivent vite dans la douleur de l’incertitude et oscillent entre badinage et dégradation : « car tu me peux tromper sans que j’en sache rien. » Les Sonnets (1609) sont novateurs, à l’heure de la poésie érotique élisabéthaine. Désespérés dans leur résonance amère et cinglante, ils s’opposent à l’artificialité précieuse de la poésie pétrarquéenne. Mais si toute vie est en marche vers sa destruction, le véritable amour ignore le déclin. Peter Brook invite à un voyage sacré de reconnaissance dans les sensations de l’amour suivies de celles forcément plus âcres de l’éloignement affectif. Les Sonnets, dits par Natasha Parry et Bruce Myers, acteurs anglophones au talent artistique éprouvé, sont rythmés par les plaintes musicales de Couperin et de Franck Krawczyk. Le verbe intime résonne et rougeoie entre les murs couleur cuivre des Bouffes du Nord, un aveu magistral d’histoire et d’amour vainqueur du temps. La véritable étoile.
