« J’ai découvert Médée Kali à l’occasion d’un atelier de recherche sur le jeu qui a eu lieu à l’ARTA1, atelier consacré à l’exploration de la dramaturgie de Laurent Gaudé. C’est à ce moment-là que j’ai lu l’ensemble des œuvres de cet auteur, ses textes de théâtre comme ses romans. Et, lorsque j’ai découvert Médée Kali, pièce construite autour d’une figure de femme multiple, mystérieuse, j’ai été profondément saisie par sa force, par son ampleur et son pouvoir de suggestion. Car le personnage créé par Laurent Gaudé est très énigmatique. A la fois Médée, Kali, Méduse, cette femme incarne également la figure d’une étrangère accomplissant un parcours dans un pays qui n’est pas le sien, réalisant un voyage vers la terre où elle a laissé le corps de ses enfants, qu’elle a elle-même tués. Hantée par l’obsession d’un rituel à accomplir, elle revient pour mettre un point final à sa vengeance, à son ressentiment. C’est sans doute, pour elle, l’unique façon de faire cesser ses angoisses.
Une vengeresse poursuivie par son destin
Elle entretient aussi un rapport très ambigu avec un homme qui la suit, qui pourrait être Persée. Elle se laisse rattraper tout en le tenant un peu à distance. Elle le désire, joue avec le danger qu’il représente, car elle sait qu’il est son ennemi, qu’il est celui qui, peut-être, va la décapiter. Mais cet homme est aussi le destin qui la poursuit, qui lui demande d’aller jusqu’au bout de sa rage. J’ai travaillé ce rôle en ne cherchant surtout pas à être Médée. Jean-François Dusigne et moi-même ne voulions pas trop penser au mythe : à travers son écriture épique et poétique, Laurent Gaudé y pense pour nous. Nous n’avons donc pas tenté d’incarner l’une ou l’autre des possibilités de ce personnage. Car, finalement, cette héroïne est peut-être tout simplement une femme comme une autre, et cette histoire ne se déroule peut-être que dans sa tête. Rien n’est figé dans Médée Kali. Chacun peut interpréter à sa façon, en laissant libre cours à ses propres intuitions, le parcours de cette femme en souffrance. »
