Qu’est-ce qui vous a amené à consacrer un programme entier à Alexander Agricola ?
Lucien Kandel : C’est un compositeur que je connais depuis assez longtemps mais que l’on n’entend jamais. C’est une musique assez difficile, rythmiquement surtout, qui se situe entre le style du xve siècle et celui de la Renaissance. On l’avait abordé il y a quelque temps à travers ses chansons et j’avais envie de faire un programme sacré autour de ce compositeur.
Comment se passent les recherches préalables au concert ?
L. K. : Nous sommes venus travailler à Royaumont plusieurs fois, notamment avec Gérard Geay sur la pratique du solfège ancien – la solmisation –, la recherche des bonnes altérations. Mais une partie du travail se fait hors de Royaumont, à commencer par la collecte des manuscrits un peu partout en Europe, leur sélection, leur correction. Sur l’un des manuscrits que nous utiliserons pour le concert, une pièce unique trouvée à Berlin, les erreurs rythmiques ou de hauteur sont très nombreuses.
Comment faites-vous pour corriger ces erreurs ?
L. K. : Nous nous basons sur les compositeurs que l’on connaît et qui ont fait partie de l’environnement musical d’Agricola, comme Ockeghem sur lequel nous avons beaucoup travaillé précédemment. Nous utilisons aussi les traités du xve siècle, tout en sachant que ces règles étaient transgressées.
La diversité des répertoires interprétés à Royaumont est-elle une stimulation ?
L. K. : Il n’y a pas spécifiquement d’échanges mais il peut y avoir des rencontres : Michaël Levinas, par exemple, s’est intéressé à notre travail sur Agricola. Nous accordons surtout une grande importance à la transmission : faire découvrir des répertoires mais aussi faire réfléchir sur les moyens techniques de les aborder. C’est ce que nous faisons à Royaumont.
