Né en 1723 et mort en en 1787, Carl Friedrich Abel, qui fut probablement élève de Bach, est l’un des derniers grands virtuoses de la viole de gambe, avant que la famille des violons prenne définitivement l’ascendant sur celle des violes sous la plume des compositeurs. Attachée à l’enrichissement du répertoire de son instrument, Lucile Boulanger propose une plongée dans cette filiation entre les deux musiciens, placée sous le signe du raffinement expressif et de la liberté héritée de l’improvisation. Son programme fait dialoguer quelques-uns des nombreux solos que Abel a composés pour la viole de gambe avec des transcriptions de pages du Cantor de Leipzig – un Prélude pour luth, une Bourrée pour flûte et deux mouvements de la Sonate n°2 pour violon –, prolongeant la pratique courante à l’âge baroque du passage de pièces d’un instrument à l’autre, comme un moyen idéal de faire circuler les partitions.
