Que représente le Royal Albert Hall pour vous ?
Ludovic Einaudi : Quand j’avais 15 ou 16 ans, j’y suis allé pour assister à une représentation de Pierre et le Loup avec le chanteur anglais Donovan comme narrateur. C’est aujourd’hui encore un grand souvenir ! J’y ai joué pour la première fois en 2007 avec mon groupe et des invités comme Ballaké Sissoko, Paolo Fresu, Djivan Gasparijan, Robert et Ronald Lippok… Et cette année, j’avais le désir de faire quelque chose de spécial avec un orchestre à cordes et de le filmer pour montrer cette ambiance unique… Le son y est incroyable, mais c’est surtout toute l’atmosphère qui est très particulière. C’est à la fois très intimiste et imposant. Grâce à sa forme circulaire, il s’y développe une véritable interaction avec le public. Et puis c’est tout rouge… comme à Noël !
Sur le DVD, l’ambiance est très solennelle et le public très attentif, c’est quelque chose que vous percevez sur scène ?
L.E. : Oui, en règle générale, le public de mes concerts est très concentré. Je viens d’achever une tournée en solo en Angleterre et c’était pareil tous les soirs : beaucoup de silence. Quelquefois je n’entends plus le public, je ferme les yeux, j’écoute le son du piano et j’ai comme l’impression d’être tout seul !
À Paris justement, vous allez jouer en solo. C’est un exercice qui vous plaît ?
L.E. : Le solo me donne la possibilité de faire beaucoup de variations : je peux changer chaque soir l’ordre et la sélection des morceaux. C’est l’expérience de la liberté : je peux ralentir ou accélérer les morceaux à l’envi. Avec le groupe, c’est plus organisé, mais j’aime beaucoup l’interaction humaine et musicale qui naît entre nous. En solo, je cherche une autre dimension, plus spirituelle, je me perds dans la musique.
Quelle relation avez-vous avec votre instrument dans ces moments-là ?
L.E. : Parfois je compare le piano à un petit bateau sans moteur. Au début, je dois utiliser mes bras pour avancer en espérant que le vent arrive… !
Après ce grand concert avec des cordes au Royal Albert Hall, vous avez d’autres rêves ?
L.E. : J’ai joué dans de nombreuses salles prestigieuses, mais j’aime l’idée de jouer dans des décors naturels. J’ai déjà joué dans le désert, un lieu particulier en tout point, et j’aimerais beaucoup réitérer l’expérience.
