C’est dans la blancheur blême d’un songe halluciné que marche Lulu, parmi les ombres fantomatiques qui bordent le chemin de sa vie. Scandaleuse courtisane, demi-mondaine adulée, innocente et fatale, elle capte les désirs, subjugue par la puissance sensuelle d’une féminité tourbillonnante. Insaisissable. Composée en deux actes, en 1895 et 1902, la « tragédie monstre » de Wedekind effarouche toutes les pudeurs bienséantes et taille les mots au cœur trouble des fantasmes. « Cette pièce, pour moi, c’est à la fois la lumière et l’obscurité. L’une ne peut exister sans l’autre. Elle est interprétée de manière mélodramatique : là encore, il s’agit d’un outil formel qui permet de tenir les émotions à distance. Ce que j’aime avec le mélodrame, c’est que même les moments les plus sombres peuvent être joués de manière lumineuse. » raconte Robert Wilson, fasciné par film de Georg Wilhelm Pabst avec Louise Brooks (1929) et par opéra qu’en tira Berg. Le metteur en scène américain retrouve la troupe du Berliner Ensemble, dont Angela Winkler qui est sa « Lulu ». Alliant l’esthétique formelle et le rock anguleux de Lou Reed, il donne un condensé de cette ode subversive à la liberté et déroule la vie de Lulu dans l’espace irréel du souvenir.
