Dû à la volonté de son fondateur et directeur artistique Richard Cowan, ce festival né en 1998 offre un cadre incomparable, au milieu de l’océan, à une programmation lyrique ambitieuse. Le baryton américain, invité des plus grandes scènes américaines et européennes, a découvert l’île en 1997. Dès l’année suivante, le festival était né, hébergé dans la salle de l’arsenal de la citadelle de Vauban. Les grandes œuvres du répertoire se sont depuis succédées : Les Noces de Figaro, Tosca, Le Barbier de Séville, Le Château de Barbe-Bleue… Cette année, deux ouvrages lyriques sont de nouveau programmés : Otello de Verdi et La Cenerentola de Rossini, tous deux mis en scène par Richard Cowan. Au programme également : la Messa di Gloria de Puccini en « tournée » dans les églises de l’île et d’autres concerts plus intimistes au fil des villages. Un service de bateaux ramène sur le continent les spectateurs qui le souhaitent après les spectacles.
