« C’était vraiment bien de travailler avec elle / elle prenait toujours de la hauteur sur les choses / au magasin elle avait commencé comme caissière, puis était devenue polyvalente / c’est-à-dire… qu’elle pouvait tout faire… » raconte un collègue. Elle s’appelait Estelle. Elle se moquait bien des mesquines rivalités entre employés, même si sans doute elle en était blessée. Elle supportait même la brutalité cynique de son patron, que tous détestaient. Elle croyait que rien n’était figé dans la vie, que les idées dépendaient de la façon de regarder, qu’on pouvait toujours transformer une situation, qu’on pouvait changer les gens si on leur faisait voir les choses, vraiment. Comme au théâtre. Elle a disparu. Va disparaître.
Le sens de la forme
De surprises en rebondissements, Ma chambre froide suit la trace d’Estelle, interroge son indéfectible dévotion, sa bonté, son refus de condamner les êtres. L’intrigue, nouée par ce mystère, glisse de la comédie sociale au drame policier, joue aussi du théâtre dans le théâtre. Comme dans Hamlet de Shakespeare, le recours au simulacre sert à dévoiler le réel dans son opaque complexité. « Le théâtre, c’est ma possibilité à moi de capter le réel et de rendre le réel à un haut degré d’intensité et de force. Je cherche le réel. Pas la vérité. » dit Joël Pommerat*. « C’est aussi dans la quête de la forme que peut se dégager au théâtre le sens dont nous avons besoin. En cela, je pense aussi qu’il est plus urgent de montrer que d’expliquer. » Tramant le sens et la forme par les fils du récit, l’auteur et metteur en scène livre ici autant sa conception du théâtre qu’il révèle le désarroi ordinaire face au monde et ses rouages économiques, face aux contradictions de l’humain aux prises avec le quotidien.
