Laurent Pelly déclare souvent que les œuvres imposent des images. Metteur en scène, mais également scénographe et créateur de costumes, le codirecteur du Théâtre national de Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées (aux côtés d’Agathe Mélinand) propose une version de Macbeth s’appuyant sur l’image d’un labyrinthe. « Cette tragédie est d’abord celle de l’enfermement dans lequel se mure un couple hanté par la soif du pouvoir et son obsession de s’y maintenir, fait-il remarquer. Le labyrinthe – espace carcéral angoissant, violent, dangereux et absurde – en est la représentation mentale. » Souhaitant travailler « sur la farce du pouvoir qui mène à la folie », Laurent Pelly s’est interrogé sur la nature et les origines de la barbarie. A travers ce Macbeth dont le rôle-titre est incarné par Thierry Hancisse, le metteur en scène nous propose un voyage « au cœur des ténèbres, dans une sorte de chaos où ont disparu tous les repères », mais aussi un voyage « au cœur de l’humain, de ses troubles, de son désordre… ».
