En 1981, l’auteur congolais Sony Labou Tansi publiait L’État honteux, pamphlet qui éclate alors que les coups de force écrasent les pousses démocratiques aux quatre coins de l’Afrique. Il donne la parole à Martillimi Lopez, dictateur en toute puissance qui décrète le culte national de ses organes génitaux, en emblème et solution de la Nation. Ce manipulateur odieux raconte un destin dérisoire qu’il imagine messianique et met en scènes son petit monde : ses supposés sujets, ses généraux, ses ennemis, ses collègues présidents, ses putains, sa mère… Metteur en scène baroudeur, Jean-Paul Delore transpose à la scène Machin Hernie, version antérieure du roman. Il en tire une « réflexion ironique et satirique sur la vanité du pouvoir et l’échec de la puissance, sur le besoin d’être aimé, sur la condition masculine et la solitude ». L’acteur Dieudonné Niangouna, par ailleurs auteur, metteur en scène et surtout son complice depuis vingt ans, livre ce récit porté par la déferlante des mots qui nous plonge dans la folie du pouvoir, paranoïaque jusqu’au burlesque.
