Son timbre à la fois fragile et profond en fait l’une des mezzo-sopranos les plus recherchées du moment. Magdalena Kozená aborde tous les répertoires, mais fait toujours preuve d’une grande prédilection pour la musique ancienne. Son disque « Lamento » avec Reinhard Goebel dévoilait sa maîtrise du cantabile le plus émouvant, tandis qu’un récital d’airs de Mozart sous la houlette de son mari Simon Rattle éblouissait par sa profusion ornementale. Au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, elle se consacre exclusivement à Haendel, avec une sélection des plus beaux airs. Jugez sur pièces : l’intense « Ah ! mio cor ! » d’Alcina, le bouleversant « Scherza infida » d’Ariodante (avec ses bassons fantomatiques), ou encore le célèbre « Cara speme » de Giulio Cesare. L’Orchestre baroque de Venise et Andrea Marcon profitent des interludes pour nous offrir des concertos de Vivaldi, qu’ils maîtrisent à la perfection.
