Le 15 janvier 1790, Fletcher, Christian et huit de ses compagnons fuient la Royal Navy et s’installent sur l’île déserte de Pitcairn pour y fonder, en compagnie d’hommes et de femmes de Tahiti, une minuscule république libre et égalitaire. Mais le rêve se transforme en cauchemar et Blancs et Indiens finissent par s’entretuer. Les enfants nés des amours métisses reçurent donc en héritage l’utopie libertaire et le meurtre. Que s’est-il vraiment passé à Pitcairn ? John Adams, seul marin survivant, en livra le récit aux capitaines des vaisseaux accostant sur l’île. Mais quelle est la vérité des autres hommes qui participèrent à cette entreprise révolutionnaire et sanglante ? C’est à cette question que tâche de répondre Sébastien Laurier en composant un spectacle qui croise témoignages et analyses du paradis perdu. Le narrateur de cette histoire, interprété par Arnaud Churin, est installé dans la solitude d’un salon dans lequel il convoque des personnages dont l’aventure et les errements sont l’occasion de mettre en perspective ses propres doutes et interrogations sur le rapport à l’autre et à la filiation. Entre recherches historiques et fantasmes, rêve et réalité, cet ethnologue alizéen mène à bien une enquête qui a tout d’une quête existentielle et intime.
